Prayer Letter 23

Jay Ayers

Dear Friends –

I’ve started writing this update four times now, and it keeps getting overcome by ongoing events. So here it is in one sentence: I’ve been in hospital care since Memorial Day, including dialysis treatments and triple bypass surgery (both of which have been more complicated and harder than we expected), followed by recovery at the rehab hospital and then a return to acute care to drain fluid from my pericardium. Today Micaela and I are hoping that the last drainage tube can be removed from my chest tomorrow or Friday, allowing me to return to the rehab hospital and begin to rebuild some stamina and mobility. If all goes well, I’ll be there for a week or ten days, and then be home to continue rehab and dialysis on an outpatient basis. Those of you who follow my blog (james-ayers.com) will have noticed that I haven’t posted a daily Bible reading recently. I had managed to write at least a little something every day for more than four years, but that streak has come to an end at 1,560 days. (It’s a good thing, I suppose. I have almost no memory for the first four days after bypass surgery, but I am told that I said some wondrously hallucinatory things. No one would have wanted to read that.) My plan will be to start writing again in the next days with the Bible reading for those specific days, leaving a hole from the texts that I have missed: and then gradually going back to fill in that hole as I am able to regain the strength to do so. (Some of you will recognize this as an application of the “Do Today’s Reading” principle.) Thank you for all your prayers. Micaela and I are so grateful for the words of encouragement, cards, and remembrances so many people have sent us.

Again, and always, thanks for your prayers –

I hadn’t realized what was happening with you. I am praying for good healing in the Lord’s timing and the will and energy to do PT so that you can regain strength and function. Anne

  2. Said reading principle got me through graduate school, even if that wasn’t its initial application–so here is some public praise for it! Happy to see you able to write as much as you have!
